Cardio Metabolic Testing

Now Available

The Gold standard in metabolic testing is now available at CryoWorks.

What Is Metabolic Testing?

Cardio-metabolic testing measures a person’s oxygen consumption (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2) and ventilation (VE) during resting and exercise conditions. The combination of these metrics provides unique insights into our body’s physiology including the amount of energy it expends, the type of fuel it utilizes (e.g. fats or carbohydrates) the level of muscle fatigue etc. Today, cardio-metabolic analysis (AKA VO2max, metabolic testing, Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing, ergospirometry) is being used in the competitive fitness industry to assess the following:

Fitness

Physical exercise intensity, Fuel utilization and caloric expenditure, Fitness level and progress, Optimal training zones depending of goal.

Health

Cardiovascular & pulmonary disease (CVDP) detection, Predicting myoskeletal problems (i.e. lower back pain), Diet prescription and “weight loss plateau” detection, Workout prescription for patients and individuals recovering from injuries or operations, Health-risk stratification for healthy individuals, Predicting healthcare expenses & longevity

What's Assessed?

Mechanical Efficiency

The factor by which our body converts energy from nutrients into movement is called mechanical efficiency. It is an important metric for both those who are looking to increase their athletic performance and those who are looking to lose weight.

Cardio Respiratory Fitness

Cardiorespiratory Fitness is the ability of the heart, blood cells, and lungs to supply oxygen-rich blood to the working muscles. According to the American Heart Association, Cardiorespiratory Fitness constitutes the strongest predictor for heart disease, stronger than any other risk factor, including hypertension, smoking or cholesterol.

Muscle Fiber Type

Human muscles comprise 2 types of fibers: Type I, or slow-twitch muscle fibers, and Type II, or fast- twitch muscle fibers. Determine how much of each muscle type you have.

Fat Burning Efficiency

Fat burning efficiency refers to our body’s ability to utilize fat as exercise intensity increases. Our body’s ability to utilize fat as a fuel source is dependent on our mitochondria and their capacity to oxidize fat molecules. This is also known as mitochondrial health. The higher our fat burning efficiency is, the more fat our body will be able to burn throughout the day and during a workout.

Breathing Efficiency

The way we breathe is the way we stand. Research has shown that biomarkers in our breath, such as breathing frequency and CO2 levels, provide some of the strongest predictors for myoskeletal problems, such as lower back pain. In other words, Breathing Pattern Disorders (BPD) have the ability to tell us whether a person is likely to develop body imbalances and other mobility problems.

Training Zones

Determine exercise intensity zones and how long to spend in each zone to optimize exercise results based on desired goals.
